ONDO DECIDES: Akeredolu, Jonathan’s Aide Lose Units to LP -2 Arrested With N1m cash, PDP materials

Ondo State governor and candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the state in Saturday’s governorship election is in early lead as results of the election trickle in.
Mimiko won his  Lijoka open space Ward 7 Unit 20 in Ondo with 348 votes to 18 of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and 16 of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).
The governor defeated the ACN candidate, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, in his GRA Unit 6, leading him with 5 votes.
ACN had 139 votes in this unit, while LP had 144 and PDP scored 35.
In the same vein, the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Affairs, who is a chieftain and strong financier of the PDP, Kingsley Kuku, lost his RCM Unit 2, Arogbo Ward 1 to Mimiko.
The LP scored 97 in this unit, while the PDP had 85 and ACN scored 16.
However, many of the results released in the units of Akure South, Akure North, Ifedore, Idanre, Ose and Owo were won by the LP.
LP won five wards of Apoi, while it won 6 out of the 16 units of Arogbo Ward 1 announced as of press time.
Despite that the results were coming in trickles, there was jubilation already in parts of the state, following the results so far released in many of the polling units in parts of the state.
Results in parts of Akure South Local Government showed that Governor Mimiko was in a wide margin lead.
This triggered jubilation at the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) Secondary School at Aule Ward III, Unit III of the council area.
At the unit, the LP scored 194 votes as againstthe ACN’s 44 and 40 recorded by the PDP.
The jubilations continued at Oke Agba where LP scored 314 as against ACN's 55 and PDP’s 29.
At Garage, Units 16 and 17 also in Ward III, the results showed that the LP continued in the trend. There, it scored 213; ACN, 50; and PDP, 31, while at the Unit 17, it was LP, 218; ACN, 42; and PDP, 37.
The result from Unit 7 of the same ward was LP, 224; ACN, 57; and PDP, 42.
At the Sacred Heart Primary School adjoining the Catholic Cathedral, which is Ward II, there are two polling units. The multitude of voters also burst into joy with
the announcement of the result of the election in Unit 09.
There, the results showed that the LP scored 172 votes as against the PDP’s 44 and ACN’s 28.
They swarmed around to Unit 10 also within the school compound and waited for the announcement of the result. There was no stopping the extant bliss as the result showed that the LP scored 158, also beating its closest rival, the PDP, which got 45 with the ACN scoring 18.
The relief of LP supporters was also palpable at Ijomu Junction, down to Oke Ijebu, despite the fact that voters were still casting their ballot as of 6:30 p.m. in one of the units in the area.
However, there was tension at Fanibi Junction following delay in the arrival of ballot papers at the polling units in the area. By the time it arrived at about 2:30 p.m., the voters were almost getting impatient and expressed concern over the time voting would close.
Fanibi Junction at Ondo road in Akure metropolis is where polling units 4, 5 and 14 of Ward 2 are located.
Speaking with journalists over the delay at the Sacred Heart Primary School which was the collation centre for Ward 02, INEC’s National Commissioner, Ambassador Mohammed Wali, blamed it on the Supervisory Presiding Officer (SPO), saying he did not distribute the materials in time to the relevant electoral officials.
According to Ambassador Wali, “he gave out some of the materials thinking that he would go back to the various units to give out the others. That caused unnecessary delay.”
Speaking on the time of voting in the affected units of the ward, he explained that “there is no time limit for voting,” adding that only accreditation had a time limit.
Wali praised the various security agencies that worked on the election, saying “they kept their promise of ensuring total restriction of vehicular movement.”
A storekeeper at Ijomu Junction, Dibio Raymond, who, by 6:30 p.m., had already started to sell drinks to revelling people, said “if it’s not for the eight-year limit, we will keep voting for Mimiko. He  has done well and the only thing we can give back to him is our vote. That’s what we did.”
